What is an underlying question that gives form to your work or interest in this field?
How can an understanding of felt experiences of collective
resonance contribute to conscious creation of such experiences for right
action in the world?
What is your personal experience of collective
wisdom in groups?
I experience collective wisdom as a felt engagement of
the minds, bodies, and spirits of each and all of the individuals coming
together. It is palpable. The participants know it has shown itself
though it is most often not talked about. It is joyful. It defies time/space
dimensions. It is a kind of knowing that expands our traditional concepts
of intellectual engagement to include sensory, energetic, and intuitive
knowing. It often involves emotion, including seemingly contradictory
ones simultaneously. It extends individual boundaries to embrace the
collective one and links the group with still larger forces in the universe.
It can be described as an experience of wholeness.
For me, the phrase "collective resonance" holds
my experience most fully.
What is it about the work in this field that excites
you and connects you to your own deepest self?
What excites me most is exactly that. At this point in
my life I feel I have come to an intersection of what matters deeply
to me, what unique personal gifts I can bring to the inquiry, and a
connection with other people asking similar questions. I feel energized
by the possibilities of this intersection.
Please provide a brief storyline or snapshot of
what brought you to this work.
I feel that my experiences in life to date have been
preparation for my work exploring collective resonance in groups ñ
a kind of "tuning" of myself as an instrument of understanding
and change. There has been a confluence of factors - personal, professional,
and academic (and the human relationships that define them) which have
helped ready me to contribute to the uncovering of the positive potential
of groups. Among these are a traditional background in organization
development and fourteen years as an OD consultant working with individuals,
groups, and organizations, a recent reunion with a parent lost to me
for nearly forty years and the subsequent journey toward wholeness through
integration of parts of myself, a doctoral dissertation that explores
the phenomenon of collective resonance through the experiences of thirty
people in diverse group situations, and daily life in a family of six
- sometimes resonant, sometimes not.
How would you like to be available to others in
this field?
I would like to participate with others exploring the
field through discovering new ways to map the experience of collective
resonance. I would also like opportunities to share the findings from
my study, Group Magic: An Inquiry Into Experiences of Collective Resonance,
completed in 2003, and to explore with others new questions that emerge
for them from the research. Additionally, I want to continue to be connected
with others through dialogue, networking, practice, and writing.
